Prof. Adams Abba-Aji

Prof. Adams Abba-Aji from Borno State, Nigeria has been appointed Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the prestigious Alberta Hospital, Edmonton, Canada. The Alberta Hospital was established in 1923. It will be 100 years old in 2023. It has trained millions of Doctors all the while.

Abba-Aji is a professor of Psychiatry who has been practicing in Canada for 20 years. He obtained MBBS from the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons, Canada; Royal College of Psychiatrists, U.K; the American Psychiatric Association, and the Royal Society of Medicine, UK. He has a Master’s degree in Neuroscience from the University of Maastricht, Netherlands; and also a Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Management from the Smurfit Graduate School of Business, Dublin. Abba-Aji is a relative of former Senator of Borno Central, Sen. Mohammed Abba-Aji.

Until this appointment, Prof. Abba-Aji was the leader of Integrated Youth Services Initiative in Addiction & Mental Health in Edmonton, the Zone Facility Site Chief and Addiction Mental Health at the University of Alberta Hospital and the Associate Chair of Psychiatry, Clinical Affairs, with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He has obtained several awards, recognitions, and over 70 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.

Alberta Hospital Edmonton is the largest Teaching Hospital for addiction and mental health in Western Canada. The Facility is affiliated with the University of Alberta, one of the top 5 Universities in Canada and ranked 135 best Universities in the world. And Abba-Aji is the first African to be appointed to this role.
